Professor Ewe Hong Tat
Ewe Hong Tat graduated from Chung Ling High School in Penang and later earned a first-class honors degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malaya in 1992. That same year, he received a scholar-ship to pursue graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he obtained a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1994. He completed his Pho at Multimedia University in 1999.
During his time at MIT, he served as a teaching and research assistant Upon retuming to Malaysia in 1994, he became a lecturer at the University of Malaya. In 1997, he joined Multimedia University, where he served as Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Vice President (Academic). In 2008, he began teaching at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), later becoming Vice President (Internationaliza-tion and Academic Development), and was appointed President in 2019. He is also a senior professor at the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineer-ing and Science at UTAR.
His research areas include microwave remote sensing, internet technology, and satellite image processing. He has received numerous national and international awards, including the URSI Young Scientist Award (1996), Malaysia's Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian Award for academic achievement and leadership (2005), and the Toray Science and Technology Award (2011). He is the President and a Fellow of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET), a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), and was a council member of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). He also serves as Chairman of the Science and Technology Innovation (STI) Committee of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM), and as an Educational Counselor for MIT.
His exposure to Buddhism began in primary school under the influence of his parents. In high school, he actively participated in Buddhist activities with Penang Hui Yin Seh and served as Vice President of the Buddhist Society at Chung Ling High School. During his university years, he was President of the Buddhist Society at the University of Malaya for the 1989/90 term and established the Dharma Teaching Training Program known as MiaoXi. While studying at MIT in the United States, he co-founded the MIT Buddhist Society and served as its President. Upon returning to Malaysia, he served two terms as a national council member of the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia. Since high school, he has remained active in various university and Buddhist societies and has been frequently invited to deliver Dharma talks.
He is the author of The World of Knowledge Networks and The Universe, Particles and Life series, and has published extensively in international academic journals and conferences. He also contributes regularly to newspapers and magazines such as Sin Chew Daily, Pumen, and Compassion.
